    What is Halloumi Cheese?

Traditionally made from goat's or sheep's milk, halloumi cheese is specified as a grilling cheese. It is a melting cheese slightly similar to mozzarella, however, it retains much of its shape when heated.

    Ingredients

    • Halloumi Cheese - Sliced into rectangular sticks
    • Cup-for-Cup Gluten-Free Flour
    • Egg
    • Almond Flour - Acts as the breading in this recipe
    • Seasonings - Salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a sheet tray with a lightly greased baking rack.
    2. Prep: In a small shallow bowl, whisk together the almond flour, salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. In a separate shallow bowl, place the gluten-free flour. Finally, in a third bowl, whisk one large egg.
    3. Slice the 8oz block of halloumi cheese into 8 rectangles.
    4. Assembly: *Using one hand for the dry ingredients and one hand for the wet. One at a time, dip each halloumi stick into the flour until coated (shake off excess flour), then the egg, and then coat in the almond flour mixture. Repeat until all of the cheese sticks are coated.
    5. Bake: Place the breaded cheese sticks onto the prepared tray. Bake for about 30 minutes, until lightly golden. For extra toasting, broil on low for 5-10 minutes.
    6. Serve immediately with warm marinara.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can these Halloumi Fries be made ahead of time?

These fries are best served as soon as they come out of the oven. You can, however, dredge them ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake them.

What are the best dipping sauces for Halloumi Fries?

Since these fries are very similar to mozzarella sticks, warm marinara sauce is delicious for dipping. A garlic sauce or even ranch dressing are great options as well.

Do these fries have to be baked?

No, you can lightly pan fry these in oil too. You will get a more golden crust in this process as well. However, the process of cooking these in oil adds to the fat content.

    Tips and Substitutions

    • This recipe for Halloumi Fries is designed to be gluten-free. However, if you would like to substitute the flour with all-purpose, and the almond flour for panko bread crumbs you can. *These fries will no longer be gluten-free though.
    • You can play with the seasonings. Omit the paprika and add dried basil instead. Or add a small amount of cayenne pepper.
    • For a more golden-brown crust, these Halloumi Fries can be pan-fried in avocado oil. Keep in mind that this will add additional fat to the overall dish. Otherwise, after the initial bake in the oven broil these fries for 5-10 minutes on low.
