Apples to Use in Applesauce
Ideally, you want to use softer apples when making applesauce. Some of these varieties include Red Delicious, Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Gala. I like to blend some varietals of a red apple and Granny Smith. The blend provides a nice tart and sweet balance in the overall flavor of the homemade applesauce.
Ingredients
- Apples - You can certainly use whatever soft apple variety you like.
- Water - Liquid aids in the cooking process and assists in thinning out the consistency of the sauce.
- Light Brown Sugar - Brown sugar is the sweetener for this recipe. You can also use granulated sugar or maple syrup.
- Ground Cinnamon - Applesauce is nothing without cinnamon.
Instructions
Peel, core, and chop your apples.
- In a large saucepan or nonstick stockpot, combine the chopped apples, water, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir to coat. Cover and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Continue simmering, occasionally stirring, until the apples are soft and tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat. Use a potato masher to mash the apples until you reach your desired consistency for chunkier applesauce. For smoother applesauce, use an immersion blender or food processor.
- Serve warm or cold. Allow the applesauce time to cool to room temperature before transferring it to the fridge.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Recipe Modifications
- Water - The amount of water you use will dictate the consistency. This recipe is for slightly chunky applesauce. For smoother applesauce, double the quantity of water.
- Size of the Apples - Keep in mind the size of your apples could alter the quantities in this recipe. There are roughly 3 medium-sized apples in a pound.
- For a Cinnamon Applesauce - Use one full teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Sugar Alternatives - Apples are naturally sweet. The light brown sugar in this recipe enhances what is already there. Feel free to try this applesauce recipe with other sweeteners like maple syrup.
