    Apples to Use in Applesauce

Ideally, you want to use softer apples when making applesauce. Some of these varieties include Red Delicious, Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Gala. I like to blend some varietals of a red apple and Granny Smith. The blend provides a nice tart and sweet balance in the overall flavor of the homemade applesauce.

    Ingredients

    • Apples - You can certainly use whatever soft apple variety you like.
    • Water - Liquid aids in the cooking process and assists in thinning out the consistency of the sauce.
    • Light Brown Sugar - Brown sugar is the sweetener for this recipe. You can also use granulated sugar or maple syrup.
    • Ground Cinnamon - Applesauce is nothing without cinnamon.

    Instructions

Peel, core, and chop your apples.

A nonstick pot filled with chopped apples.
Place the chopped apples in a nonstick stockpot.
A nonstick stockpot filled with apples, water, cinnamon, and sugar.
Stir in water, sugar, and cinnamon.
    1. In a large saucepan or nonstick stockpot, combine the chopped apples, water, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir to coat. Cover and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Continue simmering, occasionally stirring, until the apples are soft and tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
    2. Remove the pot from the heat. Use a potato masher to mash the apples until you reach your desired consistency for chunkier applesauce. For smoother applesauce, use an immersion blender or food processor.
    3. Serve warm or cold. Allow the applesauce time to cool to room temperature before transferring it to the fridge.
    4. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

    Recipe Modifications

    • Water - The amount of water you use will dictate the consistency. This recipe is for slightly chunky applesauce. For smoother applesauce, double the quantity of water.
    • Size of the Apples - Keep in mind the size of your apples could alter the quantities in this recipe. There are roughly 3 medium-sized apples in a pound.
    • For a Cinnamon Applesauce - Use one full teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
    • Sugar Alternatives - Apples are naturally sweet. The light brown sugar in this recipe enhances what is already there. Feel free to try this applesauce recipe with other sweeteners like maple syrup.
